Affordable Housing

The cost of housing in Santa Fe remains a heavy burden on working families. Many people who work here simply cannot afford to live here. For many workers, the benefits of the Living Wage are offset by the cost of time-consuming commutes from homes outside the city. On TUESDAY, MARCH 10, there will be a special election to decide on the Santa Fe Affordable Housing Initiative (officially titled the "Workforce Housing Funding Initiative"). If passed, it will provide funds for affordable housing by a transfer tax on the sale of high-end houses. The buyer of a home that sells for $750,000 or more will pay a one-time fee of 1% of the amount over $750,000. The money will go into the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, to help eligible families with purchase or rental assistance.

Winning this election is a critical to keeping working families together in Santa Fe.  This is different than any campaign we have worked on in the past.  Instead of relying on our elected officials to pass this law for us, the voters of Santa Fe will make this decision.  We need your help:

  • Pledge to vote FOR affordable housing on March 10th. Click here to sign our pledge form.
  •
  • Get your family, friends and co-workers to pledge to vote IN FAVOR. Download a copy of the pledge sheet here.
  •
  • Volunteer to help with the campaign. Click here to get involved!
  •
  • Donate.  Our opponents on the local and national levels are preparing to spend massively to defeat our efforts.  We need to counterbalance their money.  Send your donation to: Santa Fe Living Wage Network, PO Box 23764, Santa Fe, NM  87502.
