The cost of housing in Santa Fe remains a heavy burden on working families. Many people who work here simply cannot afford to live here. For many workers, the benefits of the Living Wage are offset by the cost of time-consuming commutes from homes outside the city. On TUESDAY, MARCH 10, there will be a special election to decide on the Santa Fe Affordable Housing Initiative (officially titled the "Workforce Housing Funding Initiative"). If passed, it will provide funds for affordable housing by a transfer tax on the sale of high-end houses. The buyer of a home that sells for $750,000 or more will pay a one-time fee of 1% of the amount over $750,000. The money will go into the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, to help eligible families with purchase or rental assistance.
