Santa Fe Living Wage Network

Supporters of a Living Wage For All Workers

as of November 28, 2007

We support the amendments currently being considered by the City Council.  They expand the law to cover
all businesses, not just those with 25 employees or more, starting January 1, 2008. They would also
establish an automatic cost-of-living increase every year, starting January 1, 2009, instead of a one-time $1
increase on January 1, 2008. We oppose any other changes to the law. These amendments move the
community forward together. They assure all of us a decent minimum wage that keeps up with the cost of
living. This is much better than the original law, which scheduled a one-time wage increase for 2008 that
only covered 60% of Santa Fe's workers. Individuals are in regular print. Business and other organizations
are in italics.

66.           Mariannah Amster: I support the living wage for all businesses. I am a manager/buyer for a small business downtown. We already strive to pay more that the living wage. We do start some younger employees with no work experience at $9 an hour and move them up as soon as they are trained. It would be wonderful if the city was more supportive of small businesses. Parking is a huge issue, particularly when it comes to attracting local customers downtown off season. The new sign ordinance is ludicrous (needing a permit to hang a sign larger than a foot by a foot in our own window costs $45 and is only good for a month. Not sure how long the permit process takes going through the historical review board? With all that small business owners deal with on a daily basis this is just another annoying task.) The city needs to look at way to support small businesses instead of hampering them so that paying the minimum wage and higher is a natural outcome of a thriving business. It’s time for the city to start advertising the unique, diverse cultural qualities of the city and not just Santa Fe style. Which may well run its course. I realize this has nothing directly to do with the Living Wage Network. But how well a business is faring does effect not only what they pay, but how many employees they are able to hire.
